Tahoe

We're back from a week in Tahoe. It was a fantastic vacation. In fact, it might have been one of our best vacations ever, despite the fact that we weren't able to spend our days lounging on a beach armed at all times with fruity drinks with little umbrellas sticking out of them (although, there was some of that, of course!) I think this vacation was among our best for several reasons. First, we were desperately in need of a vacation. Of course, that post was written pre-NICU... so, the desperation for a vacation and for some semblance of normalcy was even more pronounced. We really needed the break! And, this vacation came at the perfect time because it marked a turning point for us with Kailey because in the last few weeks it has felt like she really has gone from being a preemie to just being a baby, and a baby that can travel and hang out on the beach all day at that! We really enjoyed having time to just bask in her babyness together and watch her take in the world around her. We also had some big baby breakthroughs on vacation -- during the course of the vacation, we established a bedtime for Kai and she really seemed to get into a new napping/playing groove.

Beyond the baby stuff, the vacation rocked because of where we were. I don't just mean Tahoe (although, Tahoe is really a great place to vacation - it has everything! Swimming, hiking, biking, gambling...) This vacation we outdid ourselves with the vacation rental. It was the nicest place I've ever stayed. It had an upper and lower deck with unobstructed views of Lake Tahoe from every direction. The lower deck had a hot tub that jutted out over the edge of the deck. And, it was laid out really nicely. Three bedrooms downstairs and one bedroom upstairs. So, we were able to split up the families and everyone had plenty of space. And, the great room was truly great with 20 foot vaulted ceilings. It was just a beautiful spot to hang out and relax.

We really struck a good balance between lounging and activities. My only regret is we don't have pictures of our beach day (the battery ran out of the camera and I couldn't find the charger). We found this terrific beach one day. It felt like we were in the Caribbean with clear, blue water, perfect soft sand, and granite boulders everywhere. And, it was a great beach for the kids because it stayed shallow a long way out so they could swim with little stress. We stayed at that beach all day -- it was really fun!

But, what made it truly great was it was our first joint family vacation! Hopefully the first of many.
